‘Politics is not for criminals’…President Koroma declares

By Sorie Sudan Sesay:

Sierra Leone’s President has declared that politics is not for criminals and that those who behaved beyond the confines of the law will have to be punished. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma was speaking in an exclusive interview with the Information Attaché of the Sierra Leone High Commission in the United Kingdom Mr. Sorie Sudan Sesay at State House early this week.

“Politics is for civilized people and not for criminals whose aim is to cause chaos and confusion in the country,” the President emphasized and disclosed that he had already urged the police and the military to investigate and work within the ambit of the law. In a related development, the Sierra Leonean leader has dismissed media speculations that his government is negotiating with the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) for a Government of Inclusion.

“There’s nothing to negotiate with the SLPP,” the President declared adding, “When I met with the Leadership of the SLPP, I discussed with them in the capacity of President of Sierra Leone.”

President Koroma said issues of who should govern and who should be in the opposition have already been decided loud and clear by the people of Sierra Leone. Explaining further, President Koroma said that his meeting with the party’s hierarchy at State House early this week was to discuss issues of national concern.

“Like any Sierra Leonean, if you have an issue of national concern that needs to be resolved, I’ll discuss with you and that is exactly what we are doing with the SLPP,” President Koroma said.

Some of the issues discussed between the leadership of the ruling APC and opposition SLPP when both sides met on Monday at State House included provocation, arrest and detention of SLPP supporters, alleged elections irregularities and many other issues.
