More workers to go as witch hunt grows at NRA office in Sierra Leone

By Unissa Bangura

Gainfully employed staff of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) attached to the Departments of
Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Income Tax Division (ITD) have described the new introduction by Management to conduct an examination for workers before effecting promotion to the newly created Domestic Tax Department as not only unreasonable but a witch hunt and a ploy to lay off workers.

Reports reaching Standard Times yesterday revealed that the exams scheduled to take place on Saturday 6th August, 2011 is targeting close to two hundred workers who are expected once more to test their brains, even though specific areas as to where questions are going to be drawn are not known.

A senior staff at the Goods and Service Tax Department who preferred anonymity referred to this new theory as disrespect to especially those who have attained the position of directors and a supervisory role in these two divisions; not to mention workers who have been in the service for over two decades and have secured the experience of revenue collector.

It must be noted that majority of the NRA workers render their services on a contract basis, and
it must be a matter of fact that their educational documents and curriculum vitae are in the drawers of the institution, which makes it very simple to select or promote capable or suitable staff to the new Domestic Tax Department.

Reports say even the Directors who are in the employment of the NRA are also liable to take the exams, but if they fail to perform and cannot make it up during the examination, the alternative is for
them to be sacked

Great example. I consider this move by NRA as a step in the right direction. For an institution that controls the nerves of our economy we should have competent people to run it affairs. I only hope that the questions are relevant to the job and questions are not leak to few before the exam.

The author said “not to mention workers who have been in the service for over two decades and have secured the experience of revenue collector” experience in collecting revenue, for who?
