This barbaric act is still being practiced in the country especially in the northern part of Sierra Leone where education and civilization still has long way to overcome the minds of the people living in that part of the country. Madam Veronica Turay is still in hiding since 2010 when her family members were forcing him to head the traditional “sowe’ society also known as Female Genital Mutilation in a suburb called Kahnatotoh in Kambia district after the death of her mother who was then the head of that society for m any years ago. Female Genital Mutilation is a wide spread practice in northern Sierra Leone and because of this, many people had been caused to vacate in the communities for the city and possibly for other countries. The laws in Sierra Leone do not protect women and children from undergoing through such kind of traditional practice.
Family members say, since the escape of Madam Veronica Turay from her village in April 2010, her daughter by the name of Adama Turay was reportedly killed since she also deny heading such society with the absence of her mother. Her other daughter, Sarah Turay is also presently in hiding for fear of her life and being forced to head a society she does not want to head.
In an interview with Yalimamy, an elder from the society she told standard times that Veronica must meet them in the village and fulfill the promises of her mother for her child to become the leader of the society. Yalimamy said that unless Veronica does not come back in the village but if she does, she will surely complete the traditions of the village.
