US-Energy Company Announces Plans to Implement Clean Energy Projects throughout Sierra Leone

…New Generation Power International & Ministry of Energy to Help Boost electricity

By Ishmael Kindama Dumbuya

Last week, the New Generation Power International (NGPI), a world-class leader in the energy industry, met with Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Major Ismael Sengu Koroma, Deputy Minister of Energy 1 in Chicago to announce plans to deliver multiple utility-scale power generation facilities throughout the West-African country.

According to estimates, roughly about 80 percent of Sierra Leonean citizens lack access to electricity which is impacting greatly to the development process of the country. Once completed, the clean energy projects would deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy to help ensure power supply for the entire country.

Working closely with Major Ismael Sengu Koroma, Deputy Minister of Energy 1, Sierra Leone, Chicago-based New Generation Power International is pressing ahead with plans to enter final discussions to form a Public Private Partnership Agreement (PPPA) with the Government of Sierra Leone.

According to Major Ismael Sengu Koroma, the agreement would directly support President Ernest Bai Koroma’s ambitious goal to deliver 1,000-megawatts (MW) of energy to his country over the next three years. NGPI has partnered with Nations Solar to help transform the country’s current energy infrastructure through a combination of solar PV, hydro and distributed generation projects.

“Access to modern, clean and renewable energy in every home and business, can enable people in countries like Sierra Leone to lead better lives,” said New Generation Power International Chairman, Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria. He added that “electricity can have a critical effect on health, education and the economy.”

Nations Solar Vice President of International Energy, Peter Maurer, will work closely with NGPI and the Sierra Leone Government through the Ministry of Energy to complete all feasibility studies, environmental reviews and contract negotiations, as well as finalize exact land locations for the projects.

Larry Morgan, President of Nations Solar, believes that together, both companies have the ability to bring multiple sources of energy such as solar street lights, solar PV, hydro, thermal and distributed microgrid solutions, that will help accelerate President Ernest Bai Koroma’s energy initiative for Sierra Leone.

The first 20MW solar project is expected to break ground later this year with an additional 180MW of solar to follow over the next two years under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Simultaneously, plans for a 132MW hydro facility will be built-out and is expected to be operational by spring 2018 under a 35-year PPA.

The New Generation Power International will develop, execute and operate the projects under a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis in addition to supplying project capital based on the final signed PPPA. Once operational, the combined energy projects will have the ability to bring power to over a million people throughout Sierra Leone and create thousands of local jobs.

“When a nation such as Sierra Leone is in need of positive news, we are happy to support the President in his efforts to provide electrification to his country by 2019,” said Dr. Amit Kumar, New Generation Power International Director of Strategic Alliances.

The New Generation Power International is currently developing over 3,000MW of solar, hydro, wind and thermal projects globally and is dedicated to developing modern-state-of-the-art renewable energy facilities that will harness untapped energy potential around the world.
