Environment Protection Agency embarks on beautification of Freetown

…install flowers and flower pots along the Wilkinson Road

As part of efforts in ensuing a favorable environment suitable for all, the Environment Protection Agency of Sierra Leone has embarked on installing beautification flowers along major streets in the city. The agency had already demonstrated the project along the Wilkinson Road and other roads will also be installed with these beautiful flowers. The Sierra Leone Environment Protection Agency has realized that what is seen in other countries must be replicated here in sierra Leone with the aim of providing a conducive environment for the benefit of all.


The beautification of Freetown was done by the Agency in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Roads Authority and the Freetown City Council. The Deputy Director responsible for Field Operations and Extension at the Environment Protection Agency, Syl-Brains Kamara said there is now need for the beautification of the City. Mr. Kamara said they as an institution and the Board of the Environment Protection Agency cannot sit by and allow the city to lost its glory without beautifying it. He noted that they are collaborating with other institutions because the roads are public roads and need the corporation of all and sundry especially in ensuring that the flowers are protected.

The Executive Chairperson of the Environment Protection Agency, Madam Haddijatou Jallow said they have been working on the beautification project for the past two years but were waiting to see the end of the road constructions in the city. She reiterated that the launching of the project was made possible through the intervention of the Mayor.

According to Madam Jallow, many people have travelled abroad and have seen the beautiful streets in those countries adding that it is on that basis that the Board and Management of the Environment Protection Agency gave permission to install those flowers along major streets in the city.

Madam Jallow noted that the beautification of the city is a milestone in the country which is not only done for the interest of the Environment Protection Agency, the Freetown City Council or the Sierra Leone Roads Authority but it is for the interest of all Sierra Leoneans in the country. She called on all sierra Leoneans to embrace the project and desist from destroying those flowers and pots they have already started to install along the streets simply because they all belong to all Sierra Leoneans. According to Madam Jallow if by any means a driver damage the pots and the flowers, such driver or person must show sign of responsiveness by reporting to the police, the City Council or the Environment Protection Agency in other to find ways how to made the destroyed ones.
